Lily Bannon’s Profile:
It takes courage to be exposed.
It takes vulnerability to grow.
It takes a willingness to create.
Welcome to the platform where little pieces of my soul find a way to be seen.
Since I was a little girl I have always been experimenting with all types of natural mediums to create with. I’ve used anything from beetroot and spices in the kitchen to leaves, flowers and mud from outside and rubbed or crushed them on old ceiling boards and newspapers.

From water to wine
I strive to explore the paradoxical meanings found in human existence and acknowledge that life in itself can be a miracle. It is only when we come to terms with the complexity of life that we are permitted to surrender to creative expression, true freedom and growth. This delicate/complex balance between joy and hardship is also revealed in the symbolism of my name Lily (Pureness) Brannon (sorrow). Sorrow and suffering play an integral part in bringing us closer to the pureness of our being and exposes our true self. According to ancient Hebrew belief the meaning of your name and your function on earth are coherent.

With every word we speak an energy flows from us. Could it be that every time I say your name you are reminded of your purpose? I wonder.

I must admit that living in Stellenbosch has made me a bit of a wine snob. Oxidised wine? I just couldn’t dare drink it, but throwing it away was not an option. I ended up with lots of bottles that had just a few sips of wine left in them. When I was introduced by Marie Stander to wine as a paint medium, a whole new world opened up before me.

Painting with wine allows me to create from that experimental playfulness that I had as a little girl. Wine is layered in symbolism. It is ever-changing from the moment it touches the paper and comes to life just like us humans. Using it as a paint medium is unpredictable and one can never know the exact colour that will emerge from the paper in the end. Wine has a mind of its own and it will splash and drip wherever it likes. It holds a story from the moment the farmer plants the seed right through to the glass in your hand. By painting with wine the story has an everlasting life while still changing in colour and form.

My inspiration mainly comes from the medium itself and the names and stories of people. These names and stories point to a deeper meaning and purpose, even without our immediate awareness.

My wine would love to tell your story.
